I make my own vodka starch.

LOVE LOVE LOVE how well it works.

Of course this is just MY opinion.

I find for the best /stiffest fabric if I am using spray starch spray once and completely saturate the fabric... let it air dry completely. If its not as stiff as card stock .. repeat. I get the best results from the concentrate , using it full strength , when I want really stiff fabric.

One of my Craftsy instructors mentioned that fabric takes starch better when it is warm (the fabric) so when I'm using spray starch, I hit the fabric with the iron and then spray. I'm doing this on smaller pieces. If I have a lot of fabric, I mix liquid starch with water 1:1, soak it, wring it out, and then iron.

I recently bought a bottle of Niagara non-aerosol spray and love it. Be careful though if you have a laminate or wood floor under the ironing surface. It gets VERY slippery.

...stiff as card stock......I just cannot imagine working with fabric that feels like that. But that is just me. I have been a quilter for a long time and I have never used starch to stiffen my fabric and have made many quilts, in many different patterns, some more of a challenge, but all came out fine.

I can second this!! I found the non-aerosol Niagra and LOVE IT!! I have a ceramic tile floor ( easy to clean up with soap and water ) but boy does it get SLICK in the area of my ironing board!...I use Mary Ellen's Best Press for my quilts that are going to be presents for others....and the Niagra for smaller embroidery projects and quilts that will be mine.........

I was told to always spray the starch on the back of the fabric. That way you avoid any chance of flaking or whiote streaks. I also always iron the fabric first as the starch works better on warm fabric as Sparkeys Mom says.
