    I have seen a lot of quilts made with just 12 and 15 inche squares, different colors only, no pattern and they look quite nice on a bed. Go for it and enjoy!

    If each block is a single fabric, why don't you take squares of construction paper that size and set them on the bed to see? I did that for a YBR years ago and found out that I liked it only if the scale were reduced. Even an inch can make a big difference in how things look.
