I fold mine with a ruler and then stack in stacks about 6 or each stack. When picking out fabrics I slide the stacks out and lay on sewing table or countertop to get to the one I want. restack and put back the same. Keeps all stacks neat and ready for the next selection. Keeping things neat is easier if done all along. This is the only choice I have and I make it work.

For full width fabrics, fold in half, the ruler fold, then fold in half again. The final fold will be on the 6" side, so you can do narrow stacks that are about 10" deep. Less wasted space behind the stacks this way.

I prefer them standing up though. No boards because they waste space. Fold in half, then in half again. Then ruler fold. Stand up, 10" tall and 6" deep, with fold out. It takes up more space than the first method, but it stays neater for me.

I stack mine flat. I wouldn't be able to store it all any other way.

now that elections are over, I've gone out on a hunt for all the plastic corrugated signs!! They are perfect for folding my fabrics around them! I take them home, cut them to size, then let them soak in warm bubbles in my kitchen sink to clean them. They are plentiful and FREE! And I've never had any problems with the ink coming off on my fabrics. Standing fabrics on edge is so much neater and easier to access.

Personally I would have them standing, as I agree with Scissor Queen. It's a whole lot easier getting a certain fabric out when it's standing than when it's stacked.

I have mine hanging on clothes hangers in the closet arranged by color.

Both but mostly I fold it flat then roll it up,then stack. I've found the rolls are easier to see and I seem to get more in my shelves. When I take out I just spread my fingers around the other rolls and pull out what I want.Usually it leaves a hole that stays waiting for my new roll up addition to slide in.Sometimes I just pick roll from the top and slide it in.

If you have room for a chest of drawers, it can also be used for storage. Fold your fabric down to 12" by width of fabric, then fold that down to depth of drawer, mine works well at 6". So these 6"x12" folded fabrics stand on end in the drawer, 3 or 4 rows wide (depending on the size of your furniture). This also gives the added benefit of protecting from light and dust on the fabrics. The top of the dresser can also be used for additional storage for stacking containers, etc. lol Hope this makes sense.
