I have a Brother and it has the start/stop feature but you have to unplug the foot pedal to use it.

Mine too - BUT I have really gotten used to using the Start/Stop button and setting the speed to about medium. I do a lot of sewing in my recliner with my feet up and my machine on a TableMate II pulled up real close. I really hate fumbling for the foot control on my other machines. Guess I'm spoiled now. BTW I ordered a 1/4" foot with a guide on it for my Brother and it sews the most perfect 1/4" seam. Love it.

Some machines come with a 'start/stop' button that can be used to sew instead of using the foot pedal. On my machine, I can use either the start/stop button or the foot pedal, but there is no hybrid method of using the start/stop button to sew and then tapping the foot pedal to stop sewing.

Every manufacturer has their unique method of managing the features on the sewing machine. If you have many machines, it can be quite confusing.

My Brother works the way you describe, too.

Me too, and it starts going way too fast. I can't remember if I tried adjusting the speed setting.

I didn't know that either. Will have to try the stop/start tap method.

I have a Babylock Serenade with the start/stop & I love it. You don't have to unplug the foot pedal. I have been using the start/stop alot lately. I'm going to try the FMQ using it.

Same with the 6600 - but I do use the stop & start button when FMQ when meandering or stippling only. I set my speed and when I hit the start button it starts off slow and then increases to the speed I have selected. If doing other FMQ (a particular design as stars, hearts, etc.), I use the foot pedal because it gives me a bit more control of immediately stopping.

Same with my Janome. You either pedal or button, not both.

And I hate the foot pedal - frankly it is LOUSY! CHEESY PLASTIC!!! LITTLE CONTROL! GRRRRR-...but

Ihave found that the foot pedal stops the machine instantly, whereas when you hit the stop button the machine does a couple additional stitched before it stops, same way it goes forward before it goes into reverse.
