I use my right foot on the pedal. When I had surgery on it, I used the stop/start button on my Janome 6600. I completed a bunch of quilts that way. I was really blessed with that button.

I took a FMQ class a while back and the instructor suggested using the Start-Stop button for the very reason you mentioned....consistent speed and even stitches. I like it better than the foot pedal for FMQ.

I have a Janome 6600. I use the foot pedal exclusively. When I FMQ, I set the speed control to a low setting, start out slowly and then depress the pedal all the way. The speed stays consistently at the low speed I set. When I take my foot off the pedal, it stops immediately in the needle-down position. I can't imagine taking my hands off my work to operate the start-stop button. I loved the analogy of using cruise control on an icy road. Perfect comparison, in my opinion.

I have the Sapphire 870, and all I have to do is lift my foot and the machine stops. Either needle up or needle down depending on how I have set the machine to do. Maybe you should get out your user guide and go over it, or watch the DVD that came with your machine. You can also get some great tips at the Husquavarna website

I think that is the same with my Janome. The foot pedal has to be unplugged from the machine before I can use the start and stop feature. I will check, though. Thanks. It would be a nice feature!

I have the same machine......but had no idea about this feature! Nothing ever mentioned in the manual. Thank you so much for mentioning it. Will give it a try soon!

I have a Viking Sapphire 830 and didn't know about this also. I just lift my foot off the pedal and it stops but my model doesn't have a start/stop button. My "little" Brother has a start/ stop button or a foot pedal, learning something new all the time on this board! I also am a "beagle lady"

That sounds like a great feature for free motion quilting if you have it on your machine. Whatever works, well, works! All the Janomes I'm familiar with have to have the pedal unplugged to use the start and stop button though. (My machine of choice) I'll have to remember this when teaching FMQ classes.

My daughter has learned to sew using the start/stop button with the speed set to it's lowest setting. She was six when she started.
