Your pictures of your sewing rooms and stashes have inspired me. I spent most of today opening boxes from our big move and pressing and organizing by the size the fabric I have. I do not have a lot as I got rid of lots of stuff before I moved. But what I kept and moved, I organized it this way and when possible grouped by color -

fat Quarters to 1/2 plus yd pieces
    1 (ish) yard pieces
    Larger pieces (1.5 - larger)
    "Seasonal" Pieces (Christmas, Pumpkin, Easter)

Ok - if you organize :D - I would love to know your thoughts and how do you do it??

I organize by the background color. I have 7 of the pattern cabinets(from the fabric store) full of all quilting fabric, I have 24 of the large plastic totes (65 qt or bigger)full of non quilting fabrics. The totes are more or less organized as to the type of fabric. I recently moved also, but I brought all of my fabric.LOL

Betty-I pretty much have mine organized the way you do. Everything under 2 yards is folded and stacked on my shelves and separated by color. I also have stacks of theme fabrics--Christmas, I spy, Fall and Halloween, chicken, 30s repros, etc. Anything over 2 yards I have on a bolt. That way I know I have enough for borders or backs. My stash is not nearly as large as a lot of these ladies and this method works for me.

I pretty much do mine the same as Cathie, color first. I do keep my fqs by color separated from the larger than fq. I keep them in baskets to see them easily.

Color and size. Choices are easier made for projects that way. I do keep holiday, special occasion, and flannel fabrics separated. Again, by color first then size.

My best advice, do what works best for you. Some of us have baskets of scraps sorted by color and size, too. A types.
