Has anyone used this product? I'd like to make some fabric fortune cookies for New Year's as well as try some small origami style boxes out of fabric. It would help to know if this stuff remains pliant enough not to crack if the finished item is bent. I still want these things to feel like cotton and not like ceramic! Thanks for any help.

I have used it before. No, I have never had an item "crack" if bent. At least not in a way of "breaking" I have had it bent and then it doesn't stay stiff that way too well anymore.

Could you zig zag stitch over some fine wire on the inside of your cookies along the very edge?
Or make a cookie sandwich, fabrics right sides together with fusible on the back of one, lay the wire around the edges and fuse it all together. Just a thought.

Hmm, wire might be an interesting possibility amma. Thanks. I think I'll get some Stiffy (who came up with that name I wonder? :roll: ) at JoAnn's and play around with it. It's good to know it doesn't get too rigid so thanks for that info Gayle.

Years ago, we used to use a sugar/water mix to stiffen lace and fabric. Unfortunately, they do not last years, but may give you the texture you are looking for. It was something like a cup of sugar with only a tablespoon of water.

I use Stiffy when I make crocheted snowflakes. I watered it down a little then saved the rest in another jar.

LOL If it works out well, Loretta, I'll send you a fortune cookie! ;) Moonpi, I know there are many home recipes for fabric stiffeners that use starch (as in corn starch or potato starch), glue, hairspray, wallpaper paste, epsom salts, any number of things, but I'm a bit concerned about the attraction any of those would have to bugs. :shock: The Stiffy is something I know I can use in mixed media pieces that combine Japanese papers with fabrics, too. The fact that it is reasonably priced and readily available is also a big plus! :-D
