Thank you all so much for your replies about the stitch regulator. Thanks to Scrappycat for letting me know it's not a magic wand. I thought it was.

I don't care for a stitch regulator on a domestic machine. I can't speak for a LA, as I don't have one. I'd rather control the stitch myself and have found that as I became familiar with my machine and FMQ, it just becomes natural to quilt smoothly-like any skill you aquire.
