    What exactly is meant by stitch width?

    If you are doing a zig zag stitch or other decorative stitch it is how wide the stitch is. My machine does up to 7 mm wide; your machine may be different.

    I use the stitch width for regular piecing. If i set it at 4.5 and use my 1/4 inch foot, it moves the needle a little to the right and gives me a scant 1/4 inch seam.
    I have a Janome but I think it's the same on most machines.

    Interesting - I hadn't heard that before. Thanks for the tip. (And I was glad of the question, because I'd wondered too!)

    I too have a Janome, a MC6500. Thanks for the tip. I'm still working to achieve that scant 1/4" seam.
