The first option is definitely the best. I just love the design! Quilts that incorporate optical illusion are some of my favorites, and yours is awesome!

i like option 2, with a red boarder, and a trip to the LQS if you want it bigger.

I like the idea of a red binding or a royal blue would also be nice.

I like the second one best: with the darker colors in the center. Then a border would pull it together and the white would be part of the frame. I wouldn't put two the same on top and two the same on the bottom. They look much better alternated.

I prefer the colors diagonally with the darker strips on the outside. I think it defines the borders. I really like the idea of black and grey. If you add color, you would probably have to do a lot more blocks to get a balance. If you want to make it bigger, what about a pieced border? Same width, but change colors. Example-on first picture, top row would be white, black and then grey. Right side would be grey then white (see the pattern). Then finish it with a border of black. This should increase the size considerably without taking away from this outstanding image! Great looking top!

The creams and browns were put with the blacks and greys because they coordinate. I would be tempted to at least do a trial of adding them. At worst, maybe you'll end up with a black and grey wall hanging and a cream and brown table runner!

But I think it's worth trying to intersperse the brown and cream.

But I tend to try things A LOT....not always with success. But I figure it's more about having fun.

    Mary,

there is no pattern that I know of, I saw it on pinterest and just winged it ... but it's VERY easy.

I used a jelly roll that was 2.5 inches wide.

for one block you do this:
cut out two dark squares (2.5 x 2.5) and one light square that is 2.5 x 2.5
sew them in a row (light in the middle, with a dark on each side)
then cut 2 strips (about 6 inches long) of the dark and sew across the top and bottom. (your light square is now surrounded by dark fabric).
then cut 2 strips (about 6 inches long) of light fabric and sew on both sides (left and right)
then cut 2 strips (about 10 inches long) of light fabric and sew on the top and bottom

Voila you have one block done.

Do the same thing reversing the light and dark fabric.

Square them up, cut in half (triangles), and sew the opposite triangles together.

You can make all kinds of patterns with these - it's all in how you lay them out!

    Good luck!
