I keep mine in trunks, several of them. when I am working on a quilt, I only want the materials out that I am using. I keep them separate in a large basket on end of cutting table. When you walk into my sewing room, you see no material in site! When I start planning a quilt, I get it all out and sit in the floor for hours deciding how many to use and which values I want. Of course I am a scrap quilter, and this is what works for me.

I just bought 250 fabric sheets from Polar Notions. I know they were definitely pricey, but I have spent a fortune on my fabric, and they deserve to have the best storage method that works for me. I will be storing them in a book shelf once I get it back from the guy that is painting my furniture pieces for my room. I can not wait to get those pieces back. Anyways, that is my storage stories.
