Eleanor Burns joins binding straight in the instructions for her Lover's Knot.
If I am short on fabric I will use her method. Otherwise I use diagonal joins.

When I'm making the binding before it is attached -I use the 45 join. When I'm attaching the 2 ends after sewing it to the quilt - I use a straight. So much easier and nobody notices.
