I just saw Anita gross an Solomon and she does this all the time...but she fuses a strip of interfacing before making the cut so that on both sides of the cut is interfacing which corrals the bias.

I just wanted to thank everyone for all the great ideas and advice. I cannot wait to get my machine back! The awful thing about bringing it into the shop was that I started looking around at all the other machines I would love to have -- and really shouldn't even think about getting.

It is perfectly fine to not use a base, just what you prefer to use. The base does add weight to the quilt. Just make sure when you stitch that you leave a good seam width so it doesn't ravel apart. Otherwise go for it.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought the main reason to use a foundation fabric was if you were using a really thin fabric (like batiste or voile or some of the vintage cottons). If you are using regular weight fabric I don't see a need for it.
