Shannon--Leaders-enders are pre-cut squares that you keep next to your sewing machine. When you reach the end of a seam on a quilt that you are piecing, you feed two face to face squares under the presser foot and sew them together ("enders"). You can then snip the threads attached to your main piecing. That saves thread because you aren't pulling out a long length at the end of each seam. When you are ready to sew the next seam on your main quilt, that little 2-patch is a "leader". You feed your next pieces right under the presser foot after it and it keeps the edges of your pieces from getting eaten up by the feed dogs. When you snip off the leader-ender 2 patch, you put it aside in a basket or box. After you have done this MANY times, you can press and join all those little 2 patches into a quilt top!

Bonnie Hunter recommends cutting 2.5" squares of any scraps that you have from other projects. These little beauties can be sorted by color if you wish. Then you always have an assortment of leaders-enders to use while piecing other things. She's one smart lady!

Here is my String Quilt. I had a free pattern from the internet, revised it some. The pattern had all the blocks framed in with corner stones. When I laid the blocks out I liked how the blue strips fit together. So here she is. It was fun to do.

My LQS had Kansas Troubles strips in a jelly roll. I went there is look at Bali Bops for this project.
Tomorrow I am getting the backing and binding to finish this. Right now I am thinking quilting will be feathers every which way. I will look for a green for the backing and pull the purple color that is in the piano keys for the binding.

Since it is a wedding gift, I will be dating the back of the quilt and adding names.

I love seeing that each string quilt is so unique. Here's mine, made with fabrics that I received from swaps or grab bags and that I knew I wouldn't be using for a planned quilt because I really didn't like them much.

I currently have 63 12 1/2" blocks done waiting to be put together. It will be a king size when its done. Will try and post pics later. I use all my odd pieces of batting.

We have had a one day quilt a thon doing these blocks. The local hotels donated sheets that they could not use anymore and we cut them up for foundations.
The second year everyone in the quilt group brought in all their scraps of batting.

The first year we did 550 and the second we did 330. From the first year we were able to make 22 quilts for the fire department to sell. They made over $5000 for their training fund for the volunteers. The second year we sold them and the proceeds were donated to a group that helps residents of the community in need.

Its a great way to get together and do something you don't have to think too much about.
