Strip piecing question
#1
I have 2-1/2" strips that I'm wanting to use for a 12" finished square for a swap. I've made squares that were just whatever size they ended up, but not ones that were a specific size before. It's looking like I won't be able to do a square that utilizes the diagonal as the edge of the square and have it come out the correct size.
Would I be able to use a different width strips and make it work? If so what width would they need to be?

Sorry...if I don't have a picture already in my computer I don't know how to get it posted....will try to describe the one I have in mind.
3 or 4 (could be more) strips stitched together, cut into squares, then cut diagonally, arranged back into squares with the diagonal as the outer edge of the square and the long strips forming a pinwheel/windmill in the center of the block.
Will see if I can figure out this webcam and maybe I can get a picture!

Are you all set? I can't find the pattern, but after thinking about it I probably would add a 1/2" all around. So 12 1/2" becomes 13" to compensate for your other two 1/4" seams. Does this math work for you?

Was it the Twist & Turn Disappearing 9 Patch? Here's one: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-16190-1.htm It is a variation on the regular D9P and creates a pinwheel in the center if you turn the pieces correctly.
Here is another that is a string or strip quilt--sort of a twisted Rail Fence: http://quiltville.com/striptwist.shtml
And another that sews squares onto strips and then cuts on the diagonal of the square: http://www.quiltingboard.com/t-49685-1.htm
