Baby blocks, with diamonds about 4" long -- I can guarantee authentic to that era, because I am lucky enough to have inherited one.

Of course, it is before the Civil War but Burgoyne Surrounded looks great in a variety of colors as well as the tradition 2 color quilt. I made it in bright colors for my daughter.

How about an Underground Railroad inspired quilt?

I made a C. W. Quilt a few years ago for my DH's birthday. I didn't have C.W. Fabric, so made Log Cabin Blocks and used those all around the center piece.
The center piece was pictures of the main generals of the war and Pres. Lincoln. I included The Gettysburg Address.
This was when putting pictures on quilts was big. I embroidered around the picture to finish the edges. Used quite a bit of Gold Fabric throughout.
PM me if you want to know more.

Also, she has quilting books on the Civil War. I'm attempting her present block of the month: Yankee Diary
