I want to make my daughter a table cloth/quilt. Do I sandwich it like a quilt, or leave out the batting so it will drape?

At most, I'd suggest using flannel as batting; but it really isn't necessary.

I would use a thin batting, simply because of the seams causing glasses to sit at an angle and tip easily.

I have one in the planning stages right now and my plan is to use flannel for the backing--no batting at all. I will have to pre-shrink the flannel & top though, so it doesn't wrinkle up when it's washed. I like wrinkly quilts but not wrinkly tablecloths.

You could use a very thin batting such as PRE WASHED flannel, or a good muslin (also prewashed), then again, you could just use a good quality sheet. Just make sure everything is prewashed. You might even want to use poly cotton instead of 100% cotton for the top that way it wouldn't have to be ironed.

Definitely use a batting to give it definition and to give it shape. It also will help if you put anything hot on the cloth to buffer the heat.

Crap! I didn't think about having to iron it! Oh well, time to come up with Plan B! The irons in my house (3 of them) are all designated to quilting. I can't let hubby see me ironing something other than quilt fabric or he might realize the iron can put the creases back in his work pants and make his dress shirts look better. He might even figure out that t-shirts can be ironed. He's all ready wanting me to use the buttonhole attachment to make additional buttonholes on his shirts. I showed him the manual and said, "Go for it" and that scared him out of my studio for a while. Ironing is pretty simple though, so he might come back!

My hubby lets me take his shirts to the cleaners!!
Otherwise it takes forever to press his shirts, and as for his pants, what crease??? You mean there is supposed to a crease down the front of the leg? Can't believe it, I am ironing more now than ever before LOL. sure is more fun, though.

I don't use batting in mine.
