I took my machine as a carry on in a bag, but it was wrapped in fabric and also had some of my clothes around it so that it was definitely cushioned. Be sure and put the needle down and the foot down. This was before 9/11 so it wasn't a lot to getting it on the plane.

I would take it as a carry-on...but from your avatar, what about scuba gear?

I've taken my machines on the plane but they are small ones, Janome 720 and 760 and a Brother 2125i (not all at the same time!). I found a really nice back pack that also had straps that made it a carrier at Walmart. It fits perfect in the above compartment, I wrap bubble wrap with the big bubbles around my machine to protect it (a lot lighter than fabric), needle and foot down, never had a problem.

I also carry mine on - never leave home without it - finally, after five years of carrying it, had a security person say I needed to take it out of my bag for check just like a computer...never a problem tho. I use a backpack with wheels that fits into the overhead fine.

I flew with 2 stops with a sewing machine in it's own box and never had a problem. It was a pfaff basic mechanical that I was taking to one of our daughters. It fit just fine in the overhead compartment and although I got a few giggles had no problems whatsoever. Just those "only a mother" would do that......

I haven't taken a sewing machine but did take a baby stroller as a gift for my grandson. Nobody asked where the baby was?

Regarding the needle especially, whenever I transport my machine anywhere, I always remove the needle and stick it through a small piece of fabric so it doesn't break. I also take out the bobbin, put the foot down, and remove whatever else could come off and get lost, like the spool holder perhaps?

I have never traveled with my machine, but I would imagine that even if it was a cheapie, I would still want to take it with my person - after all, luggage gets lost all the time! However, this may not be that easy now, with all the extra luggage charges on the airlines, I would imagine everyone tries as much as possible to carry on all of their luggage. Best advice - board early!
