    Some time ago I learned that cutting a small diagonal piece (a triangle) from each of the 4 corners of the fabric prevents virtually all of the threads and tangles. Try it. You might like it.

    I also clip the corners before washing, and it does help.
    I don't like to pre-wash but sometimes it's a must.
