i am a self taught try and era quilter i try and learn from my mistakes my first quilt made was the friendship ring pattern it was a wedding gift to my sister. most of my quilts are made for fundraising events for diferent charities i do not belong to a group due to i cannot find one in my area. yes i have entered my quilts in compitions at our local fair i have many first place quilts with theirribbons and i have also one best of the best four years running . yes i still have my first quilt made it was a class project for my son when he was in kindergarden parents had to help their children make a quilt of their life and family. i love to quilt for many reasons but the most important one is to see a terminally ill child receiving one of my personalized quilts made just for them what a smile they have when they receive them gives them a little break from thinking about their sickness

My husband's aunt taught me how to do the string quilt with newspapers as the foundation. She showed me a quilt book and when I saw all the different quilts I was hooked. She loaned it to me and my first on my own was ocean waves. My husband then worked at the sawmill nightshift and our children were young. When they went to bed and Jim at work I hand cut and hand sewed the whole quilt. It turned out pretty good for a first. We used it so much it finally wore out. I cut the middle out and still have it. Someday I may just frame it in the middle of another quilt. I have not decided yet. It was so fraye around the outer edges. I am self-taught since then. I gave them as gifts to my kids, grandkids and great grandkids. I just can't get enough of quilting...I am definely hooked.

Who taught you how to quilt? My older sister (family of 12)
What pattern was the first quilt you made?I made a quilt with embroidered blocks of the stations of the cross and all the Catholic prayers
Do you still have your 1st quilt? No, I donated it to a church raffle
Which of your quilts is your favorite and why?I like the Bowtie quilts because they are easy. Also, Snow ball quilts.
What do you do with the quilts you make? Some I sell, but alot I give away to people in need
What is the oldest quilt in your collection? a picture quilt I made when my children were babies. It is missing a corner because our first dog chewed it off so I zigzagged the corner shut at a diagonal.

Have you ever entered a quilt in a quilt-show or fair?some of my first quilts when I was a teenager, I did and won blue ribbons. Have not entered in the last couple of years because I am too busy when fair time rolls around.

Why do you quilt? To gain some of my sanity back from my hubby and teenagers.

I am self taught; jumped right in and made "Judy's Flower Garden". Was very difficult for me but am not the kind to start with a pot holder. I still have it, tho it is a little tattered. My favorite quilt is one where we found an old pattern of girls w/umbrellas which I appliqued in squares. Very unique. I either use the quilts or give them to my married children. Don't have a "collection" per se. I am too backward to go to guilds or workshops and don't have enough confidence in my work to enter in shows. I began quilting because I was crocheted out and hands don't work as well anymore. I love to quilt and can't ever wait to finish one so I can start another. I still hand quilt but am about to venture into machine quilting.

Who taught you how to quilt?
My mother had a friend that was 20 years older than her and this friend loved to quilt. I was fascinated by her quilting and when I was about 12, she gave me my first quilting lesson. I'll never forget this wonderful lady and the special gift she gave me.
What pattern was the first quilt you made?
King size Grandmother's Flower Garden appliqued on solid squares. Not very smart for a first quilt.
Do you still have your 1st quilt?
Yes, when I decide to make a quilt that seems to be a challenge, I get this one out and reminisce on how hard it was. I don't think anything will ever be harder than that first quilt I made.
Which of your quilts is your favorite and why?
Usually the one I just finished because I'm so excited have it done but the quilt I made for my oldest daughter's wedding (my avatar) is my favorite for now. I'm working on a whole cloth quilt for my second daughter's wedding now. That may be come my favorite. We will see.
What do you do with the quilts you make?
Mostly I give them away to family and friends but more and more I'm making them for myself. I have quilted for over 30 years and a few years ago realized I only had 4 quilts I'd made. I decided to remedy that and have made 6 quilts for myself since then.
What is the oldest quilt in your collection?
A quilt my Great Grandmother made in the late 1800's. She did not have power in her house at the time and never owned a sewing machine. It hangs proudly in my living room and is made of old clothes and sheets. I am currently working on a quilt (Grandmother's Flower Garden) completely hand stitched in memory of her. The top is almost finished and then I will also hand quilt it.
Do you belong to a guild, or attend workshops?
No
Have you ever entered a quilt in a quilt-show or fair?
No, I've been encouraged to do so many times but I'm not sure I would like it. I don't quilt to be graded. I quilt just for the love of quilting.
Have you encouraged others to try quilting?
Yes, in fact, I have a friend that recently retired and she asked if I would teach her to quilt. We have had a great time quilting together.
Why do you quilt?
Lots of reasons but mostly because I love quilts and quilting. I love old fashioned designs for myself but love trying new designs too. I also quilt to give a part of myself to someone else. (Some people don't understand this.) Quilting is very relaxing for me.
I also quilt so my kids, grandkids, and great grandkids will have something to remember me by. Therefore, my signature:
A quilt is a hug for future generations. :)
