I just quilted a ver big quilt. I used so fine top thread...light colored and bottom line prewound bobbin...dark colored. My backing has little dots everywhere. I played with tension and just couldn't tell if this is the backing showing or bad tension. What do you think? I know I am just asking for trouble using dark and light.

Yes you were. Back in the 90s, I was taught to always have very similar colors in the top and bottom thread especially when FMQ. It is because you can't physically match the stitch length exactly like the sewing machine can. This might or might not have been resolved with a BSR.

I used my Handiquilter avante and a pantograph.

I try yo match both threads to avoid that problem. I think once the quilt is washed the batting will puff a bit and the stitches will be hidden in the sandwich.

It's pretty difficult to achieve perfect tension, so it's best to match the top & bobbin thread. As Tartan said, after you launder the quilt, the dots will be less noticeable.

You might try tossing it in the dryer with a damp bath towel after you do the binding before you try washing it. I refuse to quilt with threads that are extremely different in color even for a client. It is just asking for trouble and disappointment.

Like Kmrchr, I had this problem on a quilt and I thought it was my machine's problem. I set the tension to just about every setting. Some settings worked fair. I'm glad you have explained how our lack of stitch regulating is the cause. Thanks for you answer.
