I've only tried the ear plugs a couple of times. They stayed on pretty well.

As for the question of how to use ear plugs, just stick them on the ends of your pins.

the pinmoors seemed a bit pricy to me so I used one of my daughters old pool noodles and cut 1/4 inch lices from it and then cut each slice into cubes - works great

"When you have tried all the rest come for the best." This saying really is true for my Pinmoors. I have 5 years of product testing into these. They are really what I claim. They will last forever. I am going to sell the Green very cheep soon. I picked a color that is really not the best. They work as well as any color, so if you are on the fence watch my web site for the Green to go on sale.
    Thanks,
    Loretta

I was skeptical about them, but they really do hold on to the pins. I put some in the border of the quilt I just started quilting, to see how well they stay on through the quilting process.

The only ear plugs I can think of are the soft, squishy foam thingies that they give you on the flight line or at the range. I tried a pair and they don't hold the pins at all - they pull right off and you might as well baste with straight pins, alone.

But, the Pinmoors stay put. I picked my quilt up off of the table a couple of feet by a Pinmoor.
