    There are many different stabilizers out there. Different weights, different materials. Could you visit a Joanne's and check out their rack of stabilizers? That could be a start. Couldn't you ask your friend? Let her know you don't know a lot about them & maybe she could at least tell you what they are. Not all stabilizers are removed from projects, some are in different ways, tear away, cut away, water soluble, sew in, fusible, repositionable.... Besides Joanne's some sewing machine dealer's carry a variety. Can also visit the Sulky website. The Sulky brand has many, especially those used for embroidery and sewing-- you might be able to learn a lot there
