There are no quilt police...how many of you don't care what color thread

My first quilt (the chicken one) I did buy coordinating thread...but then I realized I had a ton of full bobbins (and not one empty one) of every other color thread I already owned. I started using them all up, and except for the outside quilting thread that I made sure was a coordinating neutral...it just didn't seem to matter one iota what color thread was holding the whole thing together on the inside. I'm pretty sure that from here on out, unless it's a 'special' project, I'm not going to worry about anything other than whether the thread needs to be dark or light for any given project.
Any other rogue players out there using up whatever's hanging about and not worrying about matching your project?

I generally piece with a light gray or cream, but like you, I'm sure it doesn't matter at all. If I'm using white for sashing, I do use white so that it doesn't show. Just depends on how fancy the quilt

90 percent of the time I use white because it works best for my quilts (I use a lot of white fabric). But when I need another color I try to match the bottom thread to the top, because if the tension isn't perfectly balanced you can often see one of the colors on the side where it shouldn't be.

At times I use what is available in the bobbins I have in my plastic box of bobbins, however, I just finished a black/white quilt for this year's family reunion and I used a light grey thread top and bottom. I also sew for my DGD so then I use matching thread top and bobbin. When quilting I match the bobbin thread to the backing fabric and depending on the quilt, I use matching thread, Rayon thread-which I love to use for quilting, or monofilament. For piecing I don't think it's as important, but I do try to use light thread on light fabric and vice versa.

I am soooo glad I read all these posts! It's been really helpful and I have a huge amount of partially filled bobbins that will soon be used up. I have a quick question though. I am ready to machine quilt a baby quilt that has primary colours in reds, blues, and a lime green. I have no idea what color thread to machine quilt it in. The backing will be a navy color with red and green dots. Any idea input would be much appreciated.

Unless the entire quilt is dark, I always use an off white (cream) thread & also in the bobbin. If I have a mix of colours, both lights & darks - depending on what kind of quilting I do, I will change to a darker colour & usually always use a colour that matches the backing in the bobbin. I guess I am anal that way but it works for me. I hate dark thread on light fabric & vice versa (at least where you can see it). I still colour inside the lines too..........LOL
