I have one of those too. I like using it...when I can find it.

Supposedly, the back of a butter knife works as well as a hera marker and we all have multiples of knives!

If the triangles is going to match up in the block, I draw the line. If it doesn’t need to be as accurate, I have a line drawn on painter’s tape that goes from the needle to the outside of my machine bed. I put the square under the needle and keep the opposite point of the square on the line as I sew.

I use this method, works great and is quick.

I use a ruler next to the sewing machine foot (standard not a special ruler foot) to keep a straight line for many uses.

To stitch 1/4" from the diagonal line across a square first adjust your needle position to 1/4" from the left of the foot. Now place a ruler diagonally, as if you were going to draw the line, but making sure the left hand side of the foot stays in contact with the ruler, just sew. You are sewing 1/4" from the centre line which is the same as if you were following a drawn line. Make a test piece first to check on your needle position.

I use a 1/2" x 6" ruler which is designed to draw 1/4" lines and I find it really useful for echoing and sewing straight lines around borders etc if I don't want the faff of changing to the ruler foot and thicker rulers.

The drawing the line is the quicker method Back in the old day you had to figure out a triangle by adding 7/8ths to the measurement and then you either "snubbed" the ends, or went back and trimmed off the "dog ears".

I draw the lines and I pin, it gives me the accuracy I want even though my eyes don't want to show me those 7/8ths markings on the rulers!

I place a cardboard from a bias binding across the squares just beside my needle and sew against it.

Creative Grids has a ruler with the measurement lines of 7/8 instead of whole inches. It is a time saver.

I just finger press it. Then sew a needle width closer to the corner.

I just did 80 of them yesterday. I do mark them using that tool from Fons and Porter. I can't think of the name of it.
Yes, it is time consuming. I'd like to try an easier way. Thanks for bringing this up.
