I do this but it can be tricky and is not as stable. In Europe my mother had a little rest plate that the iron stood flat. It was on the wider end of the ironing board.n Something like this but oh look at the price of this board.

While on the subject of ironing boards. This is the ironing board I have. I LOVE it but it doesn't have a horizontal iron rest.

I have the vacuum pressing board. I doubt I could go back to a regular one and be happy.

This caught my attention since I'm on a very tight budget. I looked at an online calculator to see how much it was costing me to iron my quilt pieces:

That's about $180 per year.

The iron doesn't pull power the whole time it's on. When it reaches the selected temp it stops until the temp drops then it reheats for a few seconds to bring it back up. The iron isn't sitting there drawing power every minute so the cost will be much much lower then the calculator shows.
