Here are the AQS sleeve instructions for their quilt shows. I've used this. It works great and allows for the dimension of the hanging rod.

Your method sounds like mine. You didn't mention the size of your sleeve. Our show requires a 4 inch finished. That means you have to cut an 8 1/2 inch piece of fabric. One other thing I do it when I get ready to whip the bottom of the sleeve to the quilt I roll the fold toward the top of the quilt about 1/4 inch. This gives some space for the rod and it allows the quilt to hang straight from the rod and not look like the sleeve is too small. I hope that makes sense.

I have started adding a sleeve to every quilt I make, just in case I want to put it a show or hang it. After the sleeve is attached it doesn't get in the way of use and may cut down on the wear of the top edge while in use.

Holy cow! I've never been asked to prove that I made a quilt, and I'm a quilt show junkie.

I think the rule about doing the whole thing will probably be changed at some point. I know here, most shows wouldn't have many quilts if they didn't let people enter quilts that have been long armed by professional quilters.

Thanks everyone for your responses. Since the binding is so important for shows I think I'll go with my gut feeling here and just attach the sleeve separate from my binding. The little extra work of sewing the top edge on by hand will be worth it if my quilt hangs nicer.

As for the extra fabric samples, that's a new one to me as well. The entry form doesn't mention this at all. I'm pretty sure it isn't required but I have plenty of scraps if necessary! :)

For entering your quilt in a show you must be sure that the sleeve will not show above the quilt. Much safer and better to sew it on at least 2 inches below your top binding.
    Good luck, Kutnso

That's how I do mine, too. I make it about 1" shorter on each side. Just make sure that it's wide enough. Our show is VERY particular about it being 4" wide. And those premade muslin strips just aren't QUITE that wide.
