    I have pieced many backings and have never had a problem FMAing myself or a complaint from my long arm quilter.

    I piece most of my larger quilts and have never had a problem. Sometimes I do press the seam open, but not on blocks.....and I do it all the time. In fact, I just finished a table runner on my own DMS and I used a pre-done block on the back.....did not press the seams open and it worked without a hitch.....so whether on a DMS or longarm....no problems.....EVER!

    I piece all of my backs. Good way to use up the stash so I can buy more. I asked my longarmer and she said it was fine but she did suggest to not make it centered because it can be hard to line up. I just put my designs off center. I look at some of the modern quilts and quilt blocks for inspiration.

    I piece my backs with blocks and it hasn't caused a problem.

    Centering is tricky for 2 reasons--remember you need 4-6" on all sides for the LA quilter to attach the quilt so your pieced back design should allow for that, the other issue is with a vertical piecing, the rolling the quilt on the take up bar works just like if you rolled up a magazine--the pages don't stay exactly over each other. Still it's doable, but you need to talk to your quilter
