My immediate suggestion would be to change the needle to one with a larger eye and see if that works. When I use king tut I use a large needle to prevent shredding.

If you tried changing the needle and the problem still happens, it needs the attention of the repairperson - usually a problem with the stitch plate or hook. Same thing happened to me and my machine is in getting repaired now. Good luck.

Consider the possibility you may be sewing too fast. Another thing is to check your tension. If it is tight, the speed of quilting can put strain on the thread, more so on a Longarm machine. Loosen the tension both on top and bottom and see if that helps. Good luck.

I use Sewer's Aid Silicone Needle Lubricant whenever I FMQ. You draw a bead across the spool of thread and it makes a world of difference.

I bought the larger needles last night so when I use them I'll give an update. Thanks, Everyone!

I had a problem with thread breaking yesterday, changed needle, cleaned bobbin case, tried different type of needle... no luck. Rewound my bobbin and was back in business, working perfectly. The bobbin looked fine but must have wound with tension off or something. I put it on the thread spindle and wound that bobbin to another just because I had tried everything else.

When my Janome kept popping the thread it was a tiny piece of thread caught in the bobbin. It was probably a leftover from the threadcutter. I think it kept working the needle thread and tightening it until it broke. I finally found it practically standing on my head and giving a poof of canned air. I saw it move and was able to get it off with tweezers. It was really stuck. Yes I know canned air is not a good idea, but was desperate and the dealer is 70 miles away. It worked.

If your thread is still breaking with the new needle, do you have a small burr on your throat plate? I had a teeny tiny nick on the edge of the hole where the needle goes down and it frayed my thread. The guy at the repair shop told me to check there. Very carefully lightly sand it off with really fine sandpaper. It probably happened when I broke a needle. I now keep sandpaper in my sewing box.

I use a 90/14 or 100/16 top stitch needle when I'm quilting with King Tut, I get much better results. The titanium top stitch needles are my favorite, sold on the Superior Threads website.
