    Default Thread Cost

    Hello everyone. I have been searching forums regarding threads and a lot of people feel that Aurifil is too expensive even thought it is a good thread. I did a breakdown:

    Connecting Threads Essential Spool 50/3
    Yds = 1,200
    Price = $2.79
    Price per yd = $.0023

    Aurifil Small Spool 50/2
    Yds = 218
    Price = $3.95
    Price per yd = $.0181

    Aurifil Large Spool 50/2
    Yds = 1,421
    Price = $9.50
    Price per yd = $.0067

    Gutterman Sew All polyester
    Yds = 110
    Price = $2.49
    Price per yd = $.0226

    Gutterman Cotton
    Yds = 110
    Price = $2.49
    Price per yd = $.0226

    Gutterman Cotton
    Yds = 273
    Price = $4.49
    Price per yd = $.0164

    Gutterman Cotton
    Yds = 876
    Price = $8.49
    Price per yd = $.0097

    Mettler Cotton 50/3
    Yds = 164
    Price = $2.48
    Price per yd = $.0151

    Mettler Cotton 50/3
    Yds = 500
    Price = $7.49
    Price per yd = $.0150

    I like aurifil. I have piecesd two quilts one a baby and the other a lap size and I have a little less than half left. It lays very nice and I don't have a lot of lint in my machine. Mettler is iust not convinent for me to buy and I yhhnk it's expensive. I also don't yhink it's any better than gutterman.

    For colors I have the gutterman in the small spools. That one we all know we can usually get on sale and its readily available to most of us.

    My machine doesn't like coats and Clark really so that's why I didnt include it.

    I am considering connecting threads but I just haven't placed an order yet. I am waiting till after the first of the year when I buy more fabric

    What are your thoughts on thread? What thread do you use for FMQ?

    Sometimes you have to go with convenience. I stock up when I find Mettler Silk wrapped when I find it on sale. I have an older Bernina and I don't find using the larger spools or cones convenient. Not everything works for every quilter so what is important is what works best for you. I would never use the lower quality thread on my Bernina. Too much lint for me to have to clean !!

    I just started using Isacord after taking a Leah Day class on Craftsy.

    Leah sells it on her site at $6.00 for 1,000 meters (1,093 yards). You can find it from other places in a 5,000 meter spool and sometimes on sale.

    Even at $6.00 for 1,000 meters - that is 0.005489 cents per yard.

    I like that there is no lint like the cotton Gutterman I was using.

    I like Aurifil too, but now I've been turned on to Precensia and I like it even better (though it does cost more). I have lots of Aurifil in various colors on hand, and one gigantic cone of Precensia in a neutral color.

    I use those two (Aurifil & Precensia) for piecing and for when I want quilting to disappear (stitch in the ditch).

    When I want quilting to show up, I use Connecting Threads. Yes, it's lintier than Aurifil or Precensia, but it's a thicker thread so it shows up on the fabric more, and since the price is SO good I went ahead and bought a spool of every single color when they were on sale, so now I have tons of options when selecting what I'm going to use.

    patpitter the actual isacord website sells the spools for 3.95. Discount embroidery supplies also sells the apools for 3.95 - they offer free shipping on any size order too.

    I use 60 wt Presencia for piecing and sometimes for quilting, depending on the look I'm going for. A cone is 4800 yards, usually around $27, or $0.005625. It lasts a loooong time and I would use it even if it were twice the price!

    It is my understanding that Aurifil is a 50/2 thread, so I have never used it for piecing. I use the Prescencia which is 60/3, so it has the strength, but is a finer thread. For hand and machine applique, I use the Mettler Silk, which is a 50/2 thread.

    Since I donate 99% of my quilts, I can't afford to buy expensive thread. I usually use Connecting Threads Essentials thread, yes, it's a little linty, but no more than C&C and you get a lot more bang for the buck. I use Metro machine embroidery thread, 5000 m(http://www.metroemb.com/store/) for my FMQ.
