I have not done any free motion on my quilts yet. What would you suggest, Varig. thread or invisable thread or what else?

I would never suggest invisible thread for free motion. It's a pain enough just sewing straight!!

Any thread that'd you use for quilting will work. I have used everything from C&C dual duty to Sulky rayon (not strong enough for quilting). I like varigated as much as possible, but have changed threads several times in a quilt if the border needs something else. I'm about color, not what the thread is.

Edit: I agree no invisible. I used that for SITD and I hated it.

funny how some of us HATE invisible thread for quilting- other's use it all the time-
use what ever thread you want- that works for you.

I have used both variegated and invisible for FMQ. Threading the needle with invisible is the hardest part for me not the stitching itself. Today's invisible is much nicer to use than the old stuff.

I put a teeny dab of clear nail polish at the end of the thread to stiffen it up. This makes it easier to thread the needle. (Let the polish dry before threading!)

I learned with monofilimant thread on the top and it is a PAIN! I like to use cotton the best, but rayon is pretty and I find both easy to work with. Cotton and rayon thread makes a softer quilt.
