Preferences for thread varies. Personally I only use overlock, polyester thread in my serger as that's what it's designed for. I stick to cotton thread for my quilting and piecing.

I have used it for quilting and piecing also with no problems.
But some like to use all cotton materials, and I do also if it is a special gift etc.
But if it is for a daily use or baby quilt it will hold up better with the overlock thread.

If your machine like it then it's fine.
