Thread to use when tieing a quilt?

Cotton crochet thread. I've beeen tying young kids and baby quilts for many years and tried everything. These quilts are washed a lot and I found that the crochet thread holds up the best.

This was the only video I could find for a quilter's surgeon knot and I'm not sure if she is doing it correctly. I do the first part of the knot--right over left and then the second part is--left over right.

I am interested in this question also...I am helping my niecd make a quilt out of upholstery swatches. Some are quite heavy and some ravel. I do not think it can go on a quilting machine. I have tied quilts before. I use emdroidery floss and had good luck. I like the ribbon idea.
I would also like to know how to do a surgeon's know.
