Cotton crochet thread. I've beeen tying young kids and baby quilts for many years and tried everything. These quilts are washed a lot and I found that the crochet thread holds up the best.
    Good luck, Kutnso

My mom's cousin used cotton rug yarn, wool yarn, and cotton crochet thread. She always used square knots. They never came out.
Square knot: right over left, left over right.

This was the only video I could find for a quilter's surgeon knot and I'm not sure if she is doing it correctly. I do the first part of the knot--right over left and then the second part is--left over right.

I am interested in this question also...I am helping my niecd make a quilt out of upholstery swatches. Some are quite heavy and some ravel. I do not think it can go on a quilting machine. I have tied quilts before. I use emdroidery floss and had good luck. I like the ribbon idea.
I would also like to know how to do a surgeon's know.

I know this might sound funny, but I *HATE* the feeling of yarn..it give me the hibbe jibbies. I have had this aversion since i was a child. It is a great idea to use yarn...if i could actually touch it lol =)
My daughter is in her mid thirties and she can't touch cotton...either cotton balls or the cotton that comes in the top of a medicine bottle.

These are all good ideas if it`s the LOOK you want, but there is hand quilting thread that comes on the same type of spool that regular thread comes and is in the same store section.
