Bree123....Thank you for posting the size thread with the needles. I've often wanted to keep a small list by the machine. Now I can!!

If you go to the Superior Thread website you will find lots of information about thread. In fact, "Dr. Bob" has produced a DVD about threads, needles, etc. While it is true that it is geared to the wide variety of threads available from Superior, the information is applicable to other brands. The emphasis is on fiber content and weight. Thread does matter and different threads produce different results. My thread cabinet is filled with a wide variety of brands and types. If I was new to quilting I would invest in instructional information about thread and also information about batting. You can buy a sample packet of batting squares (the one I purchased featured Hobbs products). By using muslin squares, make sandwiches and quilt on them using different threads. Label them carefully with Sharpies and you can see what look you would get using different threads and different batting. I truly believe that if a new quilter takes the time and effort to educate herself or himself there will be less heartache and disappointment.

I have been quilting at least 20 years & I am still learning something new everyday. I think all of us quilters are the same. We always love trying new patterns, techniques, & a few gadgets. Lately though I have been trying new threads. Always before I just used 50wt cotton cheaper brand thread. I have found recently I love the Aurifil 50 wt for quilting but next I want to try a 60 or 70 wt. I am also going to try different threads for piecing to see if I can improve on the 1/4". I also love all the knowledge & sharing this board offers. Great bunch of quilters for sure.

40 weight thread is used for machine quilting, 50 weight is for piecing. I piece on a treadle machine and quilt with a,Pfaff QE 4.2 (domestic machine). I use all cotton threads: Aurifil, Gutterman,Mettler. The really cheap poly threads aren't something I like to use in my quilts.
