Thrift shop material find???

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder - if the cotton is worth $5 to you, it's a deal. If it's something you'd never use, pass on it. Sometimes they will separate the bundles too, especially if it's a store where you shop/donate a lot.

The upholstery fabric would probably make nice bags.

Remember the Victorian "Carpet Bags"? They lasted forever, and if you make any, be sure you like the pattern. It'll be around for a long time.
