    Make life easier for yourself. As you can see there are literally hundreds of battings. Follow the instructions on the packaging.

    I would like to mention that there is value in staggering the ties. Some battings will eventually shred or wear along a vertical grain line. If that wear line happens to be in between two rows of 4" ties, it may split long the line.

    I think if you will look at the packaging of your batting it will tell you how closely you need to quilt. Sometimes it is confusing, but if ever in doubt, try to go at least 3 or 4 inches . If you buy batting off the roll, there is usually a plastic strip between layers that will have the instructions. Good luck.
