I would not toss all your plans but make a lightweight summer quilt. I agree babies always need quilts. They can use it for her to lie on if nothing else. You can always make another, heavier, one when she is three--and old enough to love having her own quilt!-- and they move back to cold weather country.

My nephew and his wife are expecting in April (after a successful invitro) and I had plans for a baby quilt with active outdoor themes (they live and play in BC) but they just informed all of us they are moving (job-related) to OMAN for 3 years. They certainly don't need a quilt where the average temp is 40+C. I know they will live in air conditioned quarters but I no longer think a quilt is appropriate. I'm thinking of waiting till they return and their daughter will be almost 3?

Definitely go ahead with your original idea. Everyone loves a handmade quilt for their baby and babies do need to be kept warm, and as someone else pointed out, the baby will need a quilt for a playpad when on the floor.

I feel 'naked' watching tv without being bundled up in any type of blanket or quilt -winter or summer. I have light quilts with no batting, quilts with one layer of batting, quilts with 2 layers, and quilts with thick wool batting. I know I am not alone in the comfort of cuddling up with a quilt any season of the year. Baby quilts are always welcome--most parents/grandparents I know have put a blanket or quilt down on the floor for the baby to lay, sit, or crawl on. I would go ahead with your original plans.
