The first two years I tied all my quilts and they have held up well, stayed tied and (for a novice) looked good. Now that I'm machine quilting my own I see that it was much less stressful for me to do them tied! I fret over how I will quilt it way too much.

There certainly were no quilt police when they wrote that book. The guild I used to belong to refused to allow tied quilt in the yearly quilt show. One visiting quilt teacher, who was there for this discussion, pointed out that a recent quilt magazine had a tied quilt on the cover, and she would definitely have allowed it in a quilt show. So if it's OK to tie and be on the cover of a quilt magazine - go for it. For some reason, I'm all thumbs when it comes to tying quilts, so I stuck with simple machine quilting. Whatever works for you, just do it as it is your quilt.

Perhaps the quilt police (um, who?) should read the dictionary:
Quilt- a coverlet for a bed, made of two layers of fabric with some soft substance, as wool or down, between them and stitched in patterns or tufted through all thicknesses to prevent the filling from shifting.

I have tied some with high loft batting for the poofy effect. I usually use low loft when getting them to the LAQ

Be sure to post which book it is when you are home. I can't wait to see it. My 16 yr old DD tied one of her quilts, a very long and large twin. I love sleeping under it because it seems warmer then a large twin I made for myself that has a lot of quilting. Both quilts have the same batting. I also like the drape of her quilt. The only thing that bugs me sometimes is the little tassels tickle my nose some times.

Why not try a lap quilt first to see how it holds up. A friend let her kids jave a tied quilt (family heirloom) on their bed which got hard use. Fabrics detrioated and ties came loose. She is trying to preserve it and doesn't quilt.

Please send the name of the book. There are some who look down their noses at tied quilts. Two guilds that I'm in tie all their charity quilts and I'll bet the recipients love the warm snuggly results.

I tied the last two I made, they were baby quilts and gifts that were loved. When my back is hurting it is so much easier to set in my recliner and tie than bending over the machine and pulling and tugging a large quilt. I go with what I think looks best with the pattern, some are just meant to be quilted and would not look as pretty tied and others look better tied. What others think is not that important to me, it is my quilt and I have so much fun making it and that is what is important to me. And that the ones I give them as gifts like them. The only one of my quilts I have kept for myself was made of some of my favorite fabrics and tied.
