The hubs asked me one time how much I thought I had in my storage cabinet (he made) alone. I wasn't sure but told him to figure how much he spent working on the cabinet. So with his figures he multiplied 5 times. I laughed because i'm sure that would be the bare minimum of one shelf. There are 5 shelves with fabric and notions. we left it at that.

I never kept track of expenses until my DH retired, & now just to keep us on track, we log everything. No more sneaking it in the house LOL Kidding really, he has always been good about that and always gave me the line, "You know how much money we have" Prior to retirement however, I did tend to stock up though so don't have to buy nearly as much as when I started out. I have PLENTY to keep me busy for a couple lifetimes : )

I do not keep a record of the cost of each piece of fabric I buy. However, knowing the cost of an individual quilt is very important if you are planning to have the quilt appraised. You would also need to know how many hours you worked on it for an appraisal.

The only time I care how much I'm spending on fabric is when it's for a person who is paying for the quilt. I don't do that as a general rule, because I have such a large family that I'll never get through all of them in my lifetime!! LOL! I live in a camper, so not a lot of room for too much fabric. I have quite a bit of scraps & do mostly scrappy quilts. It's a fun way for me to feel productive after my health tanked & my family loves it.

I find tracking my purchases as a waste of time that could be spent quilting. I use my stash for most quilting but like what happened yesterday, when I find a fantastic bargain I will go WAY over my unofficial budget for the month. Yesterday morning I stopped in to JoAnn's use a coupon for one of the items I use frequently and found my favorite bating, Warm and Natural queen size for $20. It is normally $50. So I bought three. I am thankful that I have the budget to take advantage of this bargain but I may not use it for months and months because of other projects already in process. When I find these kind of bargains, I know that there will be a donation quilt in my future. The Good Lords provides ahead of the project sometimes.

I also will be retiring in the not to distant future and having some "extras" in my closet may be wise. Saving for the future, don't ya know! So for now, not tracking except for my one yearly goal of emptying one Rubbermaid bin's worth of fabric! Harder that you think, those bug-a-boos hold a lot of fabric!!

I have never kept up with what I spend on my quilting and other hobby's. I really don't want to know. I just want to keep on having fun doing the things I love to do.

I don't keep track of my quilting expenses. There have been a couple of times that I nearly had a heart attack at the cashiers total. :-) I don't spend a lot though. Before hubby retired I did purchase extra for when we'd be on a limited income. So far that has worked with giving me things to make. He's been retired 2 years now and I haven't even made a dent in my stash.

I can't think of a faster way to suck all the fun and enjoyment out of quilting than to have to keep records associated with it. I can figure out roughly what a quilt costs to make if I need to, but otherwise I don't think about it.

I have a ballpark amount I spend annually and DH has a rough estimate on his hobby. When I first started, I was shocked at the cost. But now that I have a stash and try to buy only in completing a project. Thread, interfacing, fleece and batting are items I have to have. I do keep receipts in a file in sewing room and about every six months I go through them to see what I have used up and sometimes I see things I forgot about- without having to get out boxes or bins.
