Yes, I did replace the needle first and installed it properly....flat side to the left. The tension adjustment is NOT working....the bobbin thread won't get picked up, yet everything seems to be running smoothly. There's even brand new thread in spool and bobbin. This is certainly a mystery!

Thank you so much for putting in the time - I will get the machine out again today and see if that is the problem. Will post what I find ASAP...

This is what I was referring to in my reply also. I found a picture that explains it better. There are grooves on the underside of the needle plate. The hook (A2 in the pic) needs to be lined up between the grooves. Check that it was not turned when you were working on it.

My DH and I just pulled it apart again and made sure it was all aligned - found it to be just like the photo. Still it will not pick up the bobbin thread and when I try to sew, no stitches and the tension tightens up so badly the thread won't move through - FRUSTRATING!! Off to my repairman today, I guess! It's okay - you can never have too many FW's and it was my dear mil's. Thank you all for your kindness and I'll let you know what the diagnosis is!
Have a great weekend all!

Update on my most recent featherweight: I had to take it to my local repairman who told me the following:
The tensioner was all gummed up with years of 'gunk'.
The poor thing was out of timing.
There was something 'growing' on the inners. (yuch!)
The belt was not the right one.
Now that 'PeeWee' is all cleaned, oiled and repaired, she's happily purring away the neatest little stitches.
Thank you all for your concern!!

Thank you! I'm so glad to have her up and running. She was my mil's very first machine (1948) and was finally re-discovered in the bowels of her belongings and found its way to me......YAY!!

Moral of the story: Any machine that has not been used for a while should be thoroughly cleaned before using. I just bought a Singer 15 and even though it sews beautifully and we did rewire it, I still feel I need to take it apart and clean it. It had been sitting in a junk shop for several years. I got a 457 for free that had been in her garage and it was full of bugs and old gummy grease.
