I made a brick quilt for my son many years ago. It was a Mary Ellen Hopkins pattern from one of her early books.
I had it quilted in an ivy pattern - called it Brick Walls with Ivy.
We lived at the time in a brick house covered in ivy.
It's easy to do and can be masculine looking with the right fabric choices for the bricks
It was, and still is, a great looking quilt.

This is a great pattern. It looks like it would work nicely for your plans.

I'm still debating on a quilt pattern, but since I didn't have enough batting (2 inches short!) I used an old thin blanket so there was something between it. Now I guess a third question
How do I put binding on it and I have a piece of ribbon that would work perfectly to use to tie it together, but how do I attach it?

I found it! I loved the pattern all of you supplied, but since I have so many other Christmas presents to do yet, I need something quick! And with this one, I don't have to worry about matching seams up! Yay!

of course, I'll use manly prints instead of kid prints

I made this one, I could find the pattern if you like it.

Question 2: For Christmas I'm going to make my neighbor a quilt. He was a bricklayer for Bethlehem Steel and I would like to make him a quilt with "bricks" but I don't like the stacked brick or yellow brick road quilt. But I don't know what else I could do. Any ideas?
Thanks for any answers in advance! You've all been so wonderful in answering questions and teaching me!

Why don't you ask his wife (or him) what his favorite brick layout was to make, and work out your quilt pattern from there? (I love to design and will try to help if you need it) That would make a special gift even more special.....and batting in the tree skirt is up to you. If you're doing decorative quilting on it then it needs batting but if not....then you can go either way on it. I like batting as it gives them some body.
