That brings to mind the chevron or braid quilt patterns.

I'm sorry, I have nothing constructive to add, but it brought to mind something I saw that I'll never forget (not even after being hit in the head)

You might even be able to find "brick". I have seen , wood and stone fabrics.

Ok, don't laugh at me but I like to use old towels as "batting" in my tree skirts. They wash well and absorb whatever water I might spill while trying to keep my tree green.

I won't laugh at you. I ended up using an old blanket that was a little worn in spots, I just didn't use those stops, but I think it's a good idea as you are recycling it from the landfill when it can have a much better use!

In response to question No. 1, I would say yes, but you can tie the quilt if you like. The first tree skirt I made was very simple with 6 inch blocks and that one I finished by tying it at the corners with narrow ribbon in red and green. We still use it, because I make tree skirts for other people and don't get around to making me one. This year I hope I can make one for me - after I finish the one for my son and his wife, as well as little Zoe. Not sure about question No 2.
