This thread has been a real eye opener. I did not realize how many people still tie quilts. Great to know another option!

I have tied several quilts but I find that they don't last well. At some point the ties break through the fabric on the back.

I tie my comfort quilts for the church. We call them 'prayer knots'. We pray for the person receiving the quilt with each knot.

I just did my first quilt - a baby quilt - which I made with hi-loft batting to be nice and puffy so I tied it ( I also don't know how to quilt yet!) but instead of cute little bows or yarn ties, I did about 12 narrow zigzags right on top of each other and tied each one off on the back, because I was worried a baby could chew and swallow the ribbons or yarn. Probably I was being a "fuss-mother" which is what my kids used to call me.

To make your ties more secure, tie them in a square knot, or even better, with a surgeon's knot, which is making two turns with the thread ends instead of one (didn't explain this very well but I can't think of another way). This secures your knot better, especially if you add FrayCheck. Linus wants quilts machine-quilted only to prevent kids from untying the knots and for wearability.

If you have the book "The Quilter's Ultimate Visual Guide", you can find the Decatur Knot on pps. 258-259. I love this book.
That site didn't work but I found these tutorials

I do because I am afraid to try machine quilting but I'm a real beginner and am having problems that 1/4" seam and matching up points but I hope to try it this summer
