My top tips for turn under:
    1. Draw the line (edge) with a ex fine pt Sharpie so you can see where to turn.
    2. Cut your applique pieces to turn on the bias. They will turn easier.
    3. Make sure you have enough of a seam allowance to turn-practice on a heart shape to see what you prefer. I like a generous quarter inch.
    4.Use a #10 millners (straw) needle-long and thin.
    5. Push the material under with the side of the needle, not the point...it will unravel the edge/threads.
6.Snip through the seam allowance (perpendicular) right to drawn line and turn under. Space cuts about the width of pinkie-more for smaller pieces.
    7. After turning, and before stitch, press down with your fingertip/nail to crease. Helps it stay down.
    8. Some batiks don't turn well.
    9. Use silk thread to turn under. It is very fine.
    10. Relax, enjoy and practice. Start with bigger shapes.

I do not like hand applique but I have not practiced it but took a class and it was not fun for me. Best of luck to you on this.

That is how I do mine all the time. I actually use the lightweight fuseible, trace, cut, turn inside out , iron on placement area, then do the stitching.

I just watched this and decided that I must try it. Thanks for sharing.
This method looks so easy I must try it too.

I learned to do applique using a Karen Kaye Buckley video. You can google her on line store. She gives you many variations of techniques in the video. By the way, love her scissors.

I don't do applique because it frustrates me. When I do, it takes a lot of practice to get it right. And also a lot of patience!

I used dots of Elmer's glue on my Sunbonnet Sue's & occasionally had to use the iron to set it up quicker. I'm told it'll wash out, but you can't really see it. Just a dot which I got by putting a dob of glue on the bottom of a plastic bottle, then used a toothpick to apply the glue as I was turning it. It gave me that extra hand I so desperately needed. Hope this helps!

Applique is not really my thing either. I am trying to learn the "Granny G" method. She does have a tutorial on line and sells a video (I have not seen it). I think for me this may be the method to use.
