I think that the patterns will probably stay the same because as others have mentioned, there are a lot of different width in fabric now. It is a good reminder to check before you buy though. I guess it is a sign of the times...higher prices and less fabric. Bummer and don't you hate those giant selvages?

Some 42 inch fabrics have been around for at least 20 years.
One just needs to CHECK the width and not assume any particular dimension.
If one is a washer, one needs to factor in that SOME fabrics shrink widthwise instead of lengthwise.
Some fabrics don't shrink at all - a very few seem to "spread out" - some shrink only in one direction - some shrink in both.
I can't tell by looking at a piece what it might do.

I normally buy the fabric when I find it and then try to find a pattern (or block) that will look good with it. When figuring how much fabric I need to buy, I assume 40" in my calculations. If I am buying for a pattern, I always add 1/4 to 1 yard extra to accound for shrinkage or if the calculations are based on a 42"-44" width. I like my borders to be LOF with no seams (unless they are pieced, or the fabric pattern requires WOF) and if the pattern maker figures on a 42-44" width I may not have enough for the blocks after I cut the borders.
