Yes, people do that. My mother in law once bought a CAR (a nice car, too), drove it for a few months (about 1,000 miles for her) and then decided she wanted the SS model. She was going to trade it in (and probably not get much money) so we bought it from her. It's amazing what some people will do.

Cancer, life crisis, stroke, MS, arthritis, death of a loved one, divorce, unemployment, financial hardship -- just a few reasons an expensive sewing machine is no longer wanted and may not have been used.

I bought a nice sewing machine for my daughter-in-law from a person who thought she wanted to learn to sew so she bought a machine from a sewing machine store. She used the machine a couple of times and found out she hated sewing. It sat around for several years until she decided to sell it. I found out about it from a friend who knew the person. It still had some of the accessories in their sealed packets and all the sales receipts etc. My daughter-in-law loves the machine. I have sold things on Craig's list and my daughter has purchased quite a few toys and such for her children off Craig's list. Like anything you have to be careful but there are deals to be had out there.

I have a Brother Coverstitch machine that I'll most likely end up selling. I thought it would be perfect for hemming flannel and fleece blankets. I took it out of the box 2 times, rearranged my sewing space to use it and both times ended up putting it back in the box before I could get around to mastering it. All I've done with it is test sewing and learned to thread it. I have every attachment offered for it, and it sits, lonely and unused in its box. In the mean time I ended up learning to use industrial hemmers so I have even less motivation to drag it out.

ccthomas liisted some reasons. I can relate, I learned to use a knitting machine at our dealer's, saved my money, made payments. When the machine arrived a number of those life events occurred. I kept thinking that someday, I would get to use it. Twenty years later it is still in original packaging and I am trying to sell it. Dealer is gone, so that is not an option.

Many people buy machines and change their minds. Bernina is a great machine and that would be a marvelous price depending on the machine number. Over my 70 sewing years I have had a Singer, then a Kenmore and finally a Bernina there was no comparison, the last one runs on and on. I had a featherweight also but gave it away, one GOOD machine is all I need and I love the Bernina.
