I do both on a lot of quilts. I like to stitch in the ditch with the machine and then hand quilt to emphasize the middle of squares or beautiful flowers or letters on baby quilts, etc. Hey, I have had no one turn down a quilt but I also have a wonderful long arm quilter and about every 3 or 4 quilts I design one that needs her talents so I guess, quilt it anyway you want. Hey, like all artists, we all do our "paintings" err quilts they way we want to do so.

Oh, my goodness! You'll see more mixed piecing than mixed quilting, anyday. There's absolutely no reason not to mix up the piecing. Many quilters will hand piece difficult sections (like areas with Y seams) or just hand piece areas when it's convenient to be working on the project on the go. Many vintage quilts have hand pieced blocks which are then sashed or joined by machine, with borders put on by machine.

Thanks to all for your advise. I thought that you could combine them for piecing so I will encourage members of my quilt guiold to make a block weither they hand or machine piece. Thanks again!!!!!

It is your quilt and you can do whatever you want with it. I have a Double Wedding Ring queen sized quilt I have been working on for 20 years (yikes, I know). I can no longer hand quilt due to arthritis and have decided the ONLY way to get it finished is to machine quilt the remaining blocks. It will be a 2014 finish project.
