    Default Using homespun fabric

Any thoughts on using homespun fabric for part of a quilt back? I need some extra fabric for a quilt back and found some homespun in my stash. Will it hold up as well as regular quilting fabric?

Did you wash the rest of the fabric? If so, then wash the homespun and use it with at least a half inch seam. If you haven't washed the rest of the fabric, not sure what to tell you as some homespun shrinks a lot more than quilting cotton. Have to see what other folks say.

Haven't used homespun that I remember. Don't know how it would act.

I made a couple of sets of shower curtains, matching window curtain, and small appliance covers out of homespun. No trouble with raveling since I used a serger, but even after a couple of years the lint from the fabric when washed and dried is incredible. (I'd prewashed the fabric to begin with)

I made an entire quilt out of homespun, front and back. I cut strips and sewed together by rows. I did prewash the fabric first. I washed it after I quilted it and it turned out so soft, I loved it. I did not have any particular problem with fraying. I still have a lot of homespun and need to make something else with it. It makes good rag quilts also.

One thing I've seen with homespun fabric is that it fades with sunlight. We've had several bolts at the store with a fade line right on the fold. Haven't seen it on any other fabrics in the store.

But I have used it in quilt tops, and as backing. It seems alright, and I just used 1/4" seams. Makes me want to ask the people I gave the quilts to, if they're holding up alright.

I always wash my homespun before using. Have used it quite often and haven't had a problem so far.

I made a raggy jacket from homespun several years ago. I preshrank the fabric and have worn it to death; no problem.

Thanks for all your replies. I ended up using about a 12" strip on two long sides of the quilt back. I had already prewashed the fabric, so hopefully it will hold up ok. It's not my quilt - I am just finishing it for a friend!
