Using a Hoop for Threadpainting

Using a Hoop for Threadpainting
I saw a video or two of people using what looks like a needle pointing hoop. (At least I think it's for needle point...maybe embroidery?) turned upside down to do threadpainting.
Is this just a plain old hoop or something special?
Are there tricks to using it I should know before I try it?
Anyone?
Thanks, Watson

I don't think you are missing anything.
It would be difficult to hold the quilt sandwich in those traditional hoops used for hand embroidery. I haven't seen it done in any of the techniques I've checked.

Yes it is a reg emb hoop upside down...I've taken two classes and when thread painting it helps control the stitching in particular areas by moving the hoop bk/forth ...ck out Nancy Prince Utube video's on your question...

The hoop keeps the fabric taut so it doesn’t pull up with the thread painting. Hoop up your work with the work flat to the machine bed and ease it under the darning foot or remove the foot to put it in position.

Yes, you can use regular embroidery hoods to thread paint and thread sketch. In my workshops I show how any sewing/quilting materials can be used to either create a whole piece or makes dimensional work that is cut out and then restitched onto your work. I've included a couple of examples.
