I have used mono-filament thread for machine quilting in the beginning, now I sometimes use it for applique work, but I have developed a preference for Rayon thread for the top of the quilt, with just a matching thread for the backing. I especially like using the variegated threads for quilting, as I think it gives a little more depth and jazz to my quilts.

Why don't you try it for yourself? Make a sample or a small lap quilt and see how you like it.
ACK a bit too late for this info, I'm currently SID with Mono on top for a queen quilt where I didn't want the stitching to show. I guess I'll find out after Christmas as it's a gift for oldest daughter.

I had to pin the seams that I was to SID with the Mono so after I stitched thast seam I would take out the pin so I knew I had already stitched it. sounds crazy put it has worked so far.
